After 'educated' horror films like 'Hereditary' and 'Midsommar', Ari Aster continues off the more acidic, dramatic track of 'Beau is Afraid'. We are in the middle of the corona era in a town in New Mexico, whose sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) is struggling with a wife (Emma Stone) who doesn't want to have children with him but would rather follow a QAnon guru (Austin Butler). The mayor (Pedro Pascal) is running for re-election and is scoring political points by demanding that everyone wear face masks everywhere. Which doesn't go down well with the sheriff either.
